TotalEnergies China Hosts 12th China Science Forum

to Drive Bioenergy Innovation and Industrial Development

Beijing, September 18, 2023 - The 12th TotalEnergies China Scientific Forum (TCSF) was held today in Beijing under the theme of Bioenergy Innovation and Industrial Development. TotalEnergies China organized the event in cooperation with the China-Europe Energy Technology Innovation Cooperation Office, the Multinational Corporation Carbon Neutrality Forum 50 (MNC50) and the China-Europe Green and Innovation Industry Association.

Bioenergy is instrumental in China's decarbonization initiatives. Thanks to the introduction of various policies covering green and low-carbon development and technological innovation, bioenergy has enormous upside potential. Against this backdrop, over 150 experts from research institutions, well-known universities, government departments, industry associations and renowned enterprises from China and abroad exchanged views at the forum on issues like China's bioenergy development strategies, sustainable aviation fuels, biofuels, biogas and innovative technologies for new biomaterials. They also shared successful case studies at the forum.

TotalEnergies’ ambition is to be a major player in the energy transition, on the road to net zero by 2050, together with society. It leads to the transformation of the company into a multi-energy company. Low-carbon energies, covering renewable energies and flexible assets but also new molecules such as biofuels, biogas, clean hydrogen and hydrocarbon synthetic fuels, are expected to account for 75% of the company's business by 2050. To achieve these objectives, TotalEnergies moves its R&D at the forefront of its innovation revisiting its technologies portfolio through the lens of sustainability and investing in new technologies for the future. Over $1 billion is annually spent in R&D and Innovation embarking over 3,500 researchers and our partners across the world.

"With the announcement of its decarbonization initiatives, China is playing an increasingly essential role in the field of low-carbon energy sources and energy innovation," said Xu Zhonghua, Vice President, Head of Research and Development (Asia) at TotalEnergies. "We hope to leverage the TCSF forum to fully share knowledge and innovations regarding biomass energy, and to build together with our Chinese partners the vision of a sustainable energy future."

Inaugurated in 2009, TCSF is an open and innovative international exchange forum. Since its founding, thousands of representatives from domestic and international industries, and investment, R&D and government organizations, as well as industry associations and the media have participated in the forum, sharing their views on hot topics in the energy sector, such as technological innovation, industrial opportunities and the current challenges.
