Total China Holds 7th Scientific Forum in Beijing

November 29, 2016, Beijing —The 7th Total China Scientific Forum (TCSF) opened in Beijing today, dedicated to Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS). More than 150 experts and guests from Chinese universities, research institutes, Total and other companies, had a wide exchange over the latest R&D progress in the fields, including challenges and trend on carbon capture technology, as well as the carbon utilization, storage, transportation and standard.

“As a responsible energy major dedicated to providing safe, clean and efficient energy solutions, Total attaches great importance to emissions management, including CCUS,” said Bertrand de La Noue, General Representative of Total in China, who kicked off the forum, “CCUS is not only a challenge to Total, but a challenge to overall industry and society. To make more technology progress on CCUS, we must synergize the resources and efforts of universities, institutes, companies and other related stakeholders.”

At the forum, professors and experts from Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, China University of Petroleum, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and various research institutions delivered speeches and presentations to share their opinions and experience on energy industry and climate change, as well as and latest achievements on CCUS. Total scientists presented series of important achievements, including the development of pilot-scale chemical looping technology together with IFP, which can be well integrated with energy and chemical plants; the leading storage competence at industrial pilot-scale by integrating oxycombution, transportation, storage and monitor expertise; and the research advancement in algae value chain, which could be a valuable approach to capture and utilize CO2 in the future, etc.

“At Total, we have been studying the subject since 2000 and have conducted the world’s first integrated CCS pilot project in Lacq, south-west France. Currently, speeding up the development of CCUS technologies is one of our priorities to combat climate change. Our group plan to allocate up to 10% of R&D budget to expedite the development of CCUS” Outlined Philippe Baptiste, Total Chief Technology Officer, “though many challenges remain today in the aspects of CCUS technological maturity, high cost, public acceptance and wide deployment, we believe it is a solution with a promising future.”  

Every year, 30 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) is released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities. The CCUS is to capture CO2, safely store it underground or make efficient geological/chemical utilization. In 2007, Total launched a fully integrated pilot CCS project in Lacq, from CO2 capture via oxycombustion to geological storage. Over the period 2009-2010, 15,000 tonnes of CO2 has been captured and stored 4,500 metres underground in a huge porous rock gas reservoir.
